Stumbling on Happiness
July 29, 2012August will take care of August
August 12, 2012Earlier in the summer, Pam Buchanan, Associate Gallery Manager at PRESS accompanied me to Letterpress Things in Chicopee. I needed to get some tools for Experimental Letterpress and while I chatted away with John Barrett, she picked through the cuts and plates with amazing patience. More patience than I have for that sort of stuff, thankfully, because she found this fabulous cross-section of the human body and put it in my basket.
She knew I would love this plate because of the work I did last summer, primarily the Solid Sound Seven.
The Solid Sound Seven sprang from drawings and large scale body paintings created during Hari Kirin Kaur Khalsa’s class Kundalini Yoga and Expressive Arts for the Fifth Chakra and Thyroid at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in January 2010.
This new variable editioned print continues that theme, but gets more specifically at the essence of the Fifth Chakra. The Fifth Chakra or the throat chakra is often linked to creativity and self-expression, but also faith and decision-making. These four things dominate much of my inner thinking and internal conversations as I go along my path in life–searching for that melody, rhyme and smile.
The next step in the mixed-media print will feature different birds finding their way through the throat–symbolizing what you want it to–the ability to speak your truth, increased creativity, a better handle on self-expression in voice and in visuals, easier decision-making, an understanding of faith, or whatever you want it to mean. These birds are singing my questions, my cries and my answers, my truth, and maybe even yours, too.
