A book for the turtle shell
A book for the sea plastic
A book for a poem about the experience.
While beach-combing with a friend in the Caribbean, we discovered a green sea turtle washed up on the beach. Some of its shell had broken off and we gathered it up. When I returned home, I made a storage book with some of the gragments from the shell.
Fast-forward 13 years. I walked the same beach, with the same friend. This time I picked up plastic, not just big pieces, but little tiny finds—as beautiful as sea glass—and just as heartbreaking as finding that turtle years ago.
Some studies show it only takes 14 pieces of plastic to kill a turtle.
Excerpt from the book with the poem:
Their silence shifts to sadness
as they continue their walk
shells in hand
*
Years later, they walk the same beach again
picking up what seems like bags and bags of trash
having a different kind of silent conversation
Waves swell and crash, licking the beach line
as the breeze fades away
